The San Francisco Marathon is an annual USATF -certified road running event held in San Francisco, California, that includes a full marathon, two half marathons, an ultramarathon, [ 1] a 10k, [ 2] and a 5K. [ 3] With the exceptions of 1988, 1993, and 2020, the marathon has been held annually since 1977. [ 4]
History. The marathon, established in 2007, was the first major marathon to be held in Eugene since 1984, when the last Nike OTC Marathon was staged. Nearly 5000 entrants participated in the inaugural 2007 marathon events, which featured about thirty elite athletes, many of whom were shooting for qualifying marks for the US Olympic Trials, which were held in New York City in November.
Breaking2 was a project by Nike to break the two-hour barrier for the marathon. Nike announced the project in November 2016 and organized a team of three elite runners who trained for a private race.
