The garnets are mostly small up to a rare 0.5". They are a dark red-purple color and generally have a good shape. They occur in a garnet-kyanite pelitic schist. Other than the Almandine garnets , there is a dark blue-gray to black Kyanite associated.

As an example, here in the Raleigh area, we have the location called Garnet Hill. This site is located about 5 miles from my house and consists of millions on pea sized garnets in matrix. On any given day, we can go to this site and collect a quartz size bag full of red garnets. Most of them cannot be polished, but a few are still pretty clear.

Not far. 4-5 miles. Take Hwy 98 west from Garnet Hill to Six Forks Rd. Take a left and it is the first creek you come to. Six Forks Rd. stops at Hwy 98 and turns into New Light Rd. on the north side of Hwy 98. I have heard of Staurolite being found at a couple of spots off New Light and hope to get out there some today and look for it.
