It took around 300,000 years of human prehistory and history for the human population to reach a billion and only 218 years more to reach 8 billion.
The United Nations estimated an annual population increase of 1.14% for the year of 2000. [14] The current world population growth is approximately 1.09%. [7] People under 15 years of age made up over a quarter of the world population (25.18%), and people age 65 and over made up nearly ten percent (9.69%) in 2021. [7]
The national 1 July, mid-year population estimates (usually based on past national censuses) supplied in these tables are given in thousands. The retrospective figures use the present-day names and world political division: for example, the table gives data for each of the 15 republics of the former Soviet Union, as if they had already been independent in 1950.
