The Scholarship Examination (also known as the Grade 5 exam) is a highly competitive Sri Lankan examination first introduced in 1947, [1] conducted by the Department of Examinations of the Ministry of Education. It is optional for students to undertake it during the final year of primary school (Grade 5; usually aged 9–10).
The following standardized tests are designed and/or administered by state education agencies and/or local school districts in order to measure academic achievement across multiple grade levels in elementary, middle and senior high school, as well as for high school graduation examinations to measure proficiency for high school graduation.

A grade 8 is also equivalent to an A*, however the grade 9 is the top end of the A*. The former C grade is set at the new grade 4, now known as a ‘standard pass’, and grade 5 being considered a ‘strong pass! under the new scheme. Although fewer qualifications have tiered examinations than before, the tiering system still exists.
