Garner was born James Scott Bumgarner in 1928 in Denver, Oklahoma [2] (now part of Norman, with some of which now under Lake Thunderbird ). His parents were Weldon Warren Bumgarner (1901–1986), [3] a widower, and Mildred Scott ( née Meek; 1907–1933), who died five years after his birth. His father was of part German ancestry.
