If it is a Forge mod (and the .zip file is the mod), you can put the .zip file in the mods folder. A .jar file is just a .zip file with a different name (rename a .jar to .zip and see what happens).

I have not bought Minecraft yet and hinging upon answer to this question. Can I install it on my master computer and also on my laptop, and have my children playing it simultaneously on both? I am not new to computers. I just do not know what kind of protection the game uses. Do you have to be logged in to be playing it?
