Because the most recent version of optifine available is for 47.1.43 and that's a review version, so no you cannot use optifine and forge for any version of forge after 47.1.43 and even if you do downgrade your forge to accommodate, some 1.20.1 mods are incompatible with it, i found that out trying forge 47.0.35 most good 1.20.1 mods like aether and twilight forest need 47.1 or higher to work ...
Optifine is a tool available for Java Minecraft which provides more festures and better control of the graphics of the game and provides for the use of shader programs to change the visuals of the game. Optifine offers many graphical improvements without using shaders but when using shaders the game can take on a whole new view.

Optifine's closed source mindset means it's slow to update, impossible to fix by the community, doesn't play nice with the other children, and doesn't even provide any options for people to tweak their experience or performance (especially when it has some of the most bass-ackwards culling logic compared to other mods).
Jul 21, 2024. #8. ZombieWither said: Apparently Optifine was 70% complete for 1.21 in the beginning of this month so it should be here soon. While that is true, Waiting for OptiFine to finish isn't really worth it in the long-term as it's performance is either now even with vanilla or worse in general.
Optifine has plenty of bugs that break some features of other mods. As an example, with Optifine, I couldn’t even use key binds with the hack client that I use. With sodium I can. I’m no coding expert, but I never understood how visual aid mod could break key binds. Lol. Also, Sodium’s zoom feature is way better than Optifine’s.
There are many websites that attempt to copy the OptiFine website, or otherwise just plainly redistribute OptiFine illegally. Their downloads may be packaged with malware, adware, trojans, and many other bad things. Be aware of what sites you're visiting, and always try to check and scan your downloads before using them.
Tinkers. Potentially any mod because Optifine is a closed source, highly invasive, non-Forge mod which hacks the entire rendering system that almost all mods use, and Optifine could break anything with any update. If you encounter problems, your chain of debugging should be: Remove Optifine to see if it is related.
Slower startup time. In Vanilla this isn't much of an issue, but in modded environments (yes, even 1.12.2 and 1.7.10) OptiFine tends to increase game loading time. OptiFine takes really long to update to newer versions of Minecraft compared to Fabric optimization mods (and even their Forge ports).
